BACKGROUND OF THE SITUATION • THE RATE OF PATIENT FALL IS A DIRECT MEASURE OF PATIENT SAFETY • HIGH FALL RATE IN THE HOSPITAL • PREVIOUSLY THE HOSPITAL MADE EFFORTS TO REDUCE RATE OF PATIENT FALLS • NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE IN FALL RATE

RATIONALE • REDUCING THE FALL RATE IN THE UNIT WILL ESTABLISH A CULTURE OF SAFETY • FALL EVENTS DURING HOSPITALIZATION ASSOCIATED WITH:  INJURIES  REDUCED FUNCTIONAL MOBILITY FOR THE PATIENTS  INCREASE PERIOD OF HOSPITAL STAY  INCREASE HEALTHCARE COSTS

GOAL(S) OF THE CHANGE • TO ACHIEVE A 50% FALL REDUCTION IN THE EMEREGENCY DEPARTMENT UNIT WITHIN 6-MONTHS • PREVENT PATIENT HARM/INJURY FROM FALL EVENTS & IMPROVE PATIENT SAFETY • ENGAGE STAFF TO IMPLEMENT A CULTURE OF SAFETY •TO DECREASE THE COST FOR FALL WITH INJURY •AVOID REGULATORY FINES AND NEGATIVE PUBLIC IMAGE
